Take a sHot at Practical Pistol Shooting!

This class is designed to help shooters that already know basic firearm handling and help them get the basics they need to be able to compete in action shooting. This club is a USPSA style club, but all the basics here will apply for both USPSA and IDPA practical shooting.

During this introduction to competition shooting workshop, we'll cover:

  • Shooting Fundamentals - review of grip, stance, aiming, trigger, recoil, and other shooting fundamentals.
  • Safety Rules - general safety rules, plus practical shooting specific safety rules to keep matches safe.
  • Range Commands - we'll teach all the commands given during matches.
  • Gear & Divisions - we'll cover common gear and match divisions overview.
  • Shooting & Movement - learn the basics of shooting & moving.

PreRequisites:

While this class is designed to be a 101 introduction to competition shooting class, it is NOT meant to teach you basic firearm handling to completely new shooters. You should already know basic firearms handling, safety, aiming and shooting, loading and unloading, at a minimum.

If you have never shot a firearm before, please contact us and we'll recommend a basic firearm and safety course before you take this class.

What to Bring:

Here's a list of the things you'll need to bring to the class:

  • Ammo - bring at least 200 rounds, and up to 250 rounds, of ammo for your gun. If you are shooting one of our loaners (details below), bring 9mm ammo.
  • Firearm - any modern semi-automatic pistol is going to be fine. Common makers include Glock, Sig Sauer, Colt, M&P, CZ, Beretta, Taurus, and many more. No micro pistols such as ones designed for ankle holsters.
  • Holster - A belt holster that fully covers the trigger (Kydex holsters are the most commonly used). No shoulder, ankle, cross draw, small of the back or SERPA holsters allowed.
  • Magazines - No, they are not called "clips". Please have at least 2, but preferably 3 or more magazines for your firearm.
  • Magazine Pouches - you should have at least 2 magazine pouches.
  • Sturdy Belt - a sturdy (rigid) belt that can hold your holster with firearm and magazines pouches with loaded magazines.
  • Food & Drink - You need to bring waters, snacks, and a lunch with you. A small cooler is recommended as well.
  • Clothing - You should have sturdy pants or shorts with a belt loop as well as whatever type of shirt you want for outdoor sunny days. Athletic closed toes shoes are also required. Highly recommended is a hat.
  • Safety - you must have your own eye and ear protection.
  • Other - we highly recommend sunscreen, a small towel, and anything else you would want for a long outdoor session.

Don't have a gun rig yet?

Don't go out and buy one just for this class. We will bring a few loaner guns, magazines, and belts. Just bring ammo and shoot one of ours. Remember, we'll cover gear and divisions at the class so you'll learn what you want to buy for later. Please just contact us and let us know what you need so we make sure we have enough for everyone.

Who is This For?

Who this class is for:

  • Anyone looking to try out shooting competitions.
  • Anyone that has basic firearms training and experience looking to improve their skills by shooting competitions.
  • Anyone that has basic firearms experience including loading and unloading your firearm, grip and stance, aiming, trigger, and basic firearms safety.
  • Anyone that has shot a match already, but didn't feel like they got a good overview and still feel they need a better overview.
  • Anyone that has shot a match and has been DQ'd (disqualified). We'll cover match safety rules during this class.

Who this class is not for:

  • Someone looking for a class to make them a better shooter. (shooting sports will make you a better shooter, but this class alone is not designed to do so)
  • Anyone that lacks basic firearms handling skills, training, and/or experience.
  • Anyone with a disability that prevents them from moving around in a stage.

Notes for Arrival:

Handling firearms openly in a group setting takes a lot of safety procedures to keep everyone safe and to prevent accidents. Please read and comply with the following rules about how to show up with your gear:

  • Any and all firearms you bring MUST BE UNLOADED and cased upon arrival.
  • Do not store ammo in your firearm case. You can put a handgun case and ammo case inside your range bag, but do not put ammo in your firearm case.
  • Please keep magazines unloaded upon arrival as well.
  • When you arrive, do not handle any firearms, ammo, or magazines until told how, when, and where to do so.
  • Please arrive 15-30 minutes early and go to the check-in area. From there, we will give you instructions on where to go and what to do.

Failing to abide by the gun handling safety rules listed here, will get you removed from the class without a refund. Again, safety is our number 1 priority. Do not have loaded guns and do not handle firearms until told to do so.
