USPSA is an a volunteer organization, and all matches require having ROs. Attending this seminar is part of the requirement to be become an RO so you can help keep this sport alive. Not only that, you'll be able to participate in level 2 and up matches as staff, help out your local club, and probably become a safer, if not a better shooter.

  • Rules - consistent application of the rules. 
  • Officiating - R.O. officiating tips and techniques  
  • Range Commands - commands given during matches.
  • 1/2 Day Range - apply what you've learned in class
  • ... plus a whole of of things you don't even know to ask yet.

Who Can Register For The seminar:

To register you must be an active USPSA member and have a USPSA or SCSA classification in at least 1 division.

PreRequisites:

In order to be eligible to become an RO and take this seminar, you must have an active USPSA membership and member number, and have a classification in at least one division in USPSA and/or SCSA. 

How to Become an RO

How to Gain Certification as an RO:

  • Take a Level One (RO) Seminar (that's what this seminar is)
  • You MUST BE a member of USPSA and have a USPSA or SCSA classification to attend the seminar
  • Complete the online exercises
  • Score a 85% or higher on a 50 question exam

What to Bring:

Here's a list of the things you'll need to bring to the workshop:


  • Stuff for Notes - most of this seminar is in a classroom. As such, you need to bring stuff along to take notes wether digital or paper notes. 
  • Ammo - bring at least 200 rounds, and up to 250 rounds, of ammo for your gun. If you are shooting one of our loaners (details below), bring 9mm ammo.
  • Firearm - any modern semi-automatic pistol is going to be fine. Common makers include Glock, Sig Sauer, Colt, M&P, CZ, Beretta, Taurus, and many more. No micro pistols such as ones designed for ankle holsters.
  • Holster - A belt holster that fully covers the trigger (Kydex holsters are the most commonly used). No shoulder, ankle, cross draw, small of the back or SERPA holsters allowed.
  • Magazines - No, they are not called "clips". Please have at least 2, but preferably 3 or more magazines for your firearm. 
  • Magazine Pouches - you should have at least 2 magazine pouches.
  • Sturdy Belt - a sturdy (rigid) belt that can hold your holster with firearm and magazines pouches with loaded magazines. 
  • Food & Drink - You need to bring waters, snacks, and a lunch with you. A small cooler is recommended as well.
  • Clothing - You should have sturdy pants or shorts with a belt loop as well as whatever type of shirt you want for outdoor sunny days. Athletic closed toes shoes are also required. Highly recommended is a hat. 
  • Safety - you must have your own eye and ear protection. 
  • Other - we highly recommend sunscreen, a small towel, and anything else you would want for a long outdoor session. 

What is an RO Anyways?

Certified by NROI, Range Officers perform most of the officiating seen at a USPSA match. They carry the timer, check equipment, score targets, and help make sure the competitor competes in a safe manner. ▪ Complete the pre-seminar exercises (online)


  • Participate in the seminar, and pass the live fire range exercise
  • Final Exam: 50 question final, online
  • Maintain certification by taking an annual 20 question online exam
  • Maintain work record for matches at level II and above.
  • Next level of certification: Chief Range Officer, CRO

Who this class is for:

  • Anyone looking to become a USPSA RO
  • Anyone wanting to be a safer shooter
  • Anyone wanting to help run the timer/tablet in matches
  • Anyone wanting to shoot at majors for free in exchange for their time to help run the matches. 
  • Anyone who is a USPSA member and has a classification in at least one division. 


Who this class is not for: 

  • Someone that is brand new to shooting and/or brand new to practical shooting. 
  • Anyone who is NOT a USPSA member, or has not shot enough matches to have a classification. 

Notes for Arrival:

Please arrive and park at the range 15-30 minutes before the class time starts. There will be a sign in sheet when you arrive and there will be clear signs for where to go. 


Most of this RO seminar is in the classroom. As such, please arrive with anything you need in a classroom setting and leave your firearms, belt, ammo, and other shooting gear in your vehicle until asked to get it.
